For those of you who don’t know, I work in marketing as my day job. I do a lot of writing in the day, a lot of which has to be very specifically targeted and useful to help drive business outcomes.

I recently became aware of Ann Handley, a content writing guru, and author of several books on how to write better for the web. I’ve been delving into her book Everybody Writes, and have been finding it incredibly useful.

In fact, a lot of her lessons can apply to personal blogging! We often think of blogging as a platform for simply writing what is in our hearts, which it is! However, if you’re the type of person like me who wants to grow a bit of an audience, the tips from Handley in the following infographic by Visually will be of use to help frame your writing.

Most specifically:

– Have a goal in mind, whether that’s to inform, entertain, or encourage someone to take action.

– Break down your idea to the very bare bones of “why does this matter?”

– When you write, think of your ideal audience, frame them as an individual, and write for that person alone.

– And don’t be afraid to get all your brain barf out on the web. Having an “Ugly First Draft” is normal – that’s what editing is for.

I hope you find these tips useful!
